7 PCOS Myths Busted


1. You Have to Cut Out Carbs


While insulin resistance is really common if you have PCOS and this affects your ability to properly manage your blood sugar, cutting out carbohydrates completely is not the answer. You do need some carbohydrates, but it's about finding the right amount for your body and what you pair it with for optimal blood sugar balance.


2. You Can't Ever Have Sugar


It is important to understand how sugar affects your body and what to pair it with if you have PCOS, especially if you have insulin resistance, but any food-related advice that uses absolutes like "always" or "never" are not realistic or sustainable and honestly sucks the joy out of food.


3. You Can't Get Pregnant with PCOS (or Get Pregnant Naturally)


This is completely false. If you struggle with irregular or long cycles, lack of ovulation, or delayed ovulation it's all about uncovering your root causes so you can restore ovulation and know WHEN you are ovulating to make sure you are trying at the right time of the month.


4. Do Not Eat Gluten or Dairy if You Have PCOS


Gluten-free and dairy-free are not blanket nutrition recommendations for PCOS. Some with PCOS may do better without one or both, it could help your symptoms, and some may need to remove for reasons like allergies or food sensitivities. Not every single person with PCOS HAS to remove these foods to be able to manage their PCOS.


5. PCOS Shows Up the Same for Everyone


PCOS can show up totally differently from person to person. Some people can have symptoms like acne, hair loss, unwanted hair growth, others may not. Some may be struggling with gut issues and inflammation, while others are dealing with insulin resistance and blood sugar issues. Some are all of the above, some are just a few. PCOS can show up in any and all body types.


6. If You Have PCOS, You Just Have to Lose Weight


While weight struggles may be something you're dealing with if you have PCOS, if you have ever been told by anyone or even your healthcare provider to "just lose weight", this isn't helpful because it provides no guidance and completely bypasses addressing your PCOS root causes like insulin resistance or elevated androgens. We can view weight as a symptom - something we can struggle with if other things are out of balance in the body.


7. The pill is the only way to regulate your period with PCOS


The pill can regulate your bleed, making it appear as though you are having a regular period; however, a pill bleed is not a true period. A true period will always follow ovulation and the pill works by suppressing ovulation. When you take the pill you are not addressing your root causes for long-term, sustained healing.
